Why heated gloves?

Hands are the hardest part of the body to keep warm. They're far from your core, they have a lot of surface area for their size, and the moment you get cold your body starts pulling blood away from your fingers to protect your vital organs. Regular insulation only slows that down — it can't add heat back.

Heated gloves can. Thin heating elements run through the glove and a small battery at the cuff drives them, so your fingers get warmth instead of just trapped air. But there's one detail that separates gloves that work from gloves that disappoint, and most buyers never hear it — where the heating elements actually go. More on that below.

Where the heat actually sits

This is the single most important thing to check, and it's the difference between a glove you love and one you return.

Back or front panel. Cheaper gloves put one heating panel on the top of the hand and let it radiate. It genuinely helps — your best-selling AA Textile works exactly this way — but your fingertips are what actually go numb, and a back-of-hand panel warms them only indirectly.

Fingers and thumb. Better gloves run heating elements out along every finger and the thumb, so heat lands where the cold actually hits. Some — like the Volt Tatra — heat the fingers, thumb, and both sides of the hand. If numb fingertips are why you're shopping, this is the tier you want.

The rule of thumb: higher-end gloves heat the fingers and thumb; lower-end gloves heat the back or palm of the hand. Price tracks coverage almost perfectly, and coverage is what you're really paying for.

Built for riders. A 12V glove wires into the bike's electrical system through a heat-troller, so it runs as long as the engine does — no battery to go flat two hours into a cold ride, and no bulky pack at the cuff.

Style

Gloves, mittens, or liners?

Three different answers to the same problem, and the right one depends entirely on what your hands are doing.

Gloves

Individual fingers, full dexterity. The right call if you need to grip poles, work a throttle, handle tools, or use your phone. The trade-off is that separated fingers can't share warmth, so in truly brutal cold you may find cold spots between them.

Mittens

Warmest option, full stop — your fingers share one chamber and share their heat. Best for stationary cold: chairlifts, blinds, bus stops, spectating. The cost is dexterity; if you're constantly pulling them off to do things, you've defeated the point.

Glove liners

A staff favorite. Slim heated gloves designed to wear inside your existing glove or mitten — thin enough for real dexterity, and the outer shell traps the heat. Worn alone they'll heat but won't hold it. If you work outdoors, these are a must-have.

Which should you get?

Active and need your fingers? Gloves. Standing still in serious cold? Mittens. Already own a glove you love, or need maximum dexterity? Liners. Plenty of people own gloves for active days and mittens for the coldest ones.

What to look for

Six things worth checking before you buy — in the order they actually matter.

Heating coverage

The one that matters most. Fingers and thumb, or just a back-of-hand panel? If numb fingertips are the problem, pay for finger coverage — a back-of-hand panel warms them only indirectly.

Battery system

5V for the USB battery that works anywhere. AA if you want the cheapest way in. 7V for maximum heat and the widest selection. 12V only if you ride. Never mix voltages between battery and glove.

Waterproofing

Wet hands get cold no matter how much heat you throw at them. If you'll be in snow or rain, look for a waterproof membrane — Gerbing's Atlas Ultra-Flex and the Volt Tatra both have one. Wind resistance matters just as much.

Run time — at your setting

Manufacturers quote run time at the lowest setting. A typical 7V glove gives 5–7 hours; premium models with double-capacity batteries run much longer. AA gloves give about 4 hours per set. Check the number for the setting you'll actually use.

Fit

Snug, not tight. The heating elements have to sit close to your hand to transfer heat — a loose glove heats air instead of you. Too tight and you'll restrict circulation, which makes your hands colder. Size for a close, comfortable fit.

Insulation & shell

Heat is only half of it — insulation is what keeps that heat around your hand. Thinsulate is the benchmark. A leather palm adds grip and durability; a textile shell is lighter and more flexible.

Sizing, heat & care

Heated gloves want a snug fit. The elements need to sit against your hand to transfer heat, so a loose glove just warms the air inside it. But don't go too tight either — squeezing your hand restricts circulation, and restricted circulation is what makes fingers cold in the first place.

On heat: run high for the first few minutes to take the edge off, then drop to low. You'll more than double your run time, and it's the single most common reason people think their gloves "don't last." Cinch the cuff before you head out — a gapping cuff dumps warm air and lets snow in.

Do heated gloves warm your fingertips?

It depends entirely on the glove. Higher-end gloves run heating elements out along each finger and the thumb, so yes — heat lands right where your fingers go numb. Lower-end gloves use a single panel on the back of the hand that radiates warmth through the glove, which helps but warms your fingertips only indirectly. How long do heated gloves stay warm?

Are heated mittens warmer than heated gloves?

Generally yes. In a mitten your fingers share one chamber and share their body heat, which is a real structural advantage — and because less surface area is exposed, mittens often get longer battery life too. But a well-built glove with full finger coverage and good insulation can beat a mitten with only a back-of-hand panel. And a mitten you keep pulling off to do things isn't keeping you warm at all. Match the style to the activity.

What are heated glove liners, and do I need one?

Liners are slim heated gloves made to wear inside a glove or mitten you already own. They're a favorite with our staff and with people who work outdoors, because they give you real dexterity while the outer shell traps the heat. One catch: worn on their own, a liner will heat but won't hold that heat — they're designed to be layered.

Should I size up for heated gloves?

No. Buy your normal size. The heating elements need to sit close to your hand to transfer warmth, so a loose glove heats air rather than you. But avoid going too tight, too — compression restricts blood flow, and poor circulation is what makes hands cold to begin with. Snug and comfortable is the target.

Are heated gloves good for Raynaud's or poor circulation?

They're one of the most common reasons people buy them. Heated gloves deliver warmth directly to the hands and fingers, which helps prevent the vasospasms that cause numbness and pain. Look for a glove that heats the fingers and thumb rather than just the back of the hand, start on the lowest setting, and work up to the minimum temperature that keeps you comfortable. If you have reduced sensation in your hands or are diabetic, talk to your doctor first and check your skin regularly.

Can I wash heated gloves?

Remove the batteries first — always, every time. After that, follow the care tag on your specific pair: many heated gloves are spot-clean only, and leather models in particular should never go in a machine. Never put heated gloves in the dryer. When in doubt, wipe clean and air dry.

Are heated gloves touchscreen compatible?

Many are, but not all — and it's worth checking before you buy, because pulling a glove off to answer your phone is a fast way to lose the warmth you just paid for. Look for touchscreen-compatible fingertips in the product specs. Thin glove liners are usually the most touchscreen-friendly option.

Can I use any battery with my heated gloves?

No. The battery must match the voltage the glove was designed for. A higher-voltage battery can overheat the elements, damage the glove, and void your warranty. Use the battery that came with them or an approved replacement of the same voltage. The one exception is 5V: those run on standard USB power banks, which is a big part of the appeal.
