How do air-activated warmers work?
You tear the outer packet, air reaches the contents, and a slow chemical reaction produces heat for hours. There's no battery, no switch, and nothing to charge — which is the entire appeal. It can't die on you, because it was never powered in the first place.
When should I use disposables instead of rechargeable warmers?
When you're far from an outlet, when you're handing them out to a group, and as backup for the day you didn't plan on being cold. A few in a glovebox cost almost nothing and sit there for years. If you're cold routinely, rechargeable warmers are the better long-term economics — but most people who are outside a lot keep both.
Are hand warmers and toe warmers interchangeable?
No. Toe warmers are adhesive and deliberately thin so they fit in a boot without crowding your foot. Hand warmers are thicker and meant to be held or pocketed. Putting a hand warmer in a boot will restrict your toes, which cuts circulation and makes your feet colder rather than warmer.
How long do they take to heat up?
Several minutes, despite the name. The chemical reaction needs time to get going after the packet opens. Activate them before you need them rather than when you're already cold and impatient — tearing one open and expecting immediate heat is the most common disappointment with them.
