Why a heated jacket?
A heated jacket is the all-in-one answer to winter: heating panels across the chest and back, an insulated weatherproof shell, and sleeves — all in a single garment. No layering to think about, no separate coat to buy. You put it on and you're warm.
Where a vest is a mid layer you wear under something, a jacket is the something. That's the whole trade: more coverage, more warmth, more weather protection, at the cost of more bulk, more weight, and more money. If you want one piece of gear that handles a cold day start to finish, this is it.

Which voltage is right for you?
Heated jackets come in three voltages. Voltage sets how much heat the jacket can produce — but the bigger day-to-day difference is what kind of battery you're tied to.
Standard USB — any power bank works
The easiest heated system to live with. 5V runs off an ordinary USB power bank — no proprietary battery, no special charger, nothing to hunt down when you lose it. The bank you already carry for your phone will run your jacket.
Plenty of heat for everyday cold, the commute, working outside, or the sidelines — and the battery does double duty as a phone charger when you need it.

Higher output, brand battery
Noticeably hotter than 5V and quicker to warm up, with enough headroom to drive more panels across the chest, back, and sometimes the sleeves or collar. The choice when you're standing still in serious cold.
The trade-off is the battery: 7V systems use a brand-specific pack with a DC barrel plug, so replacements come from the manufacturer rather than any shelf.

Wires into your motorcycle
Built for motorcycle riders. A 12V jacket wires directly into the bike's electrical system through a heat-troller, so it delivers the most heat of any system and runs as long as the engine does — no battery to go flat mid-ride.
Off the bike, it's not practical. If you're not riding, this isn't your voltage.

The short version: most people should start with 5V — it's plenty warm for everyday cold and the USB battery is the easiest thing in the world to live with and replace. Step up to 7V if you're stationary in deep cold and want maximum output. Only choose 12V if you ride. Run times vary with battery capacity and heat setting.

Jacket or vest?
This is the question we get more than any other, and the honest answer is that most people are better served by a vest — but not everyone.
Get a vest if you already own a coat you like. A vest layers underneath it, warms your core (the most efficient place to add heat), keeps your arms completely free, and costs less. It's the lighter, cheaper, more flexible option, and it's why vests outsell jackets.
Get a jacket if you want one garment that does everything — heat, insulation, and weather protection in a single layer you can just grab and go. It's also the better call in genuinely brutal conditions, where the extra insulation and sleeve coverage earn their keep, and for riders who need a windproof outer shell.
One thing worth knowing: warming your core warms your hands and feet too. When your chest and back are warm, your body stops restricting blood flow to your extremities. Both a vest and a jacket do this — so if cold hands are your problem, either one may solve it before you buy heated gloves.

Coverage
Heat zones & settings
Most heated jackets place panels across the upper back and shoulders and along the chest — the same core zones as a vest. Better jackets add a lower back / kidney panel, which makes a surprising difference if you're standing or sitting still for long stretches.
Premium jackets go further and add heat at the collar or down the sleeves. Sleeve heating is genuinely nice on a bike or a chairlift, but it costs battery: more panels means the pack works harder, and run time drops accordingly.
Nearly every jacket offers three heat settings. Run high for the first few minutes to take the edge off, then drop to low — you'll more than double your battery life and stay comfortable all day. This is the single most common reason people think their jacket "doesn't last."

A heated jacket is your outer layer, so fit it accordingly: snug enough that the heating panels sit close to your body, but with room for a base layer and a sweater underneath. Too loose and you're heating air; too tight and you can't layer at all.
On heat: start on high for the first few minutes, then drop to low. You'll more than double your run time. Zip it up and cinch the hem before you head out — an open jacket vents the heat you just paid for.

Heated jacket FAQ
Is a heated jacket better than a heated vest?
It depends on what you already own. A vest is the better buy for most people: it warms your core, keeps your arms free, layers under a coat you already have, and costs less. A jacket is better if you want one all-in-one garment — heat, insulation, and weather protection in a single layer — or if you're facing genuinely brutal cold where the extra coverage matters. If you're on the fence and already own a good coat, start with a vest.
How long will a heated jacket stay warm?
On a typical 7V jacket with a 5,000mAh battery: roughly 2–3 hours on high, 4–6 on medium, and 6–9 on low. A 5V jacket on a decent USB power bank will run 6–10 hours on low. Bigger batteries extend all of those. Most people run high for a few minutes and then settle on low, which is where those longer numbers come from.
Should I size up for a heated jacket?
Buy your normal size. The heating panels need to sit close to your body to transfer heat, so an oversized jacket just warms the air inside it. That said, a jacket is an outer layer — unlike a vest, it should have enough room for a base layer and a sweater underneath. Snug against the body, not tight.
Do heated jackets heat the sleeves?
Most don't. The standard configuration heats the chest and back — your core — because that's the most efficient place to add warmth. Some premium jackets do add sleeve or collar heating, which is genuinely nice on a motorcycle or a chairlift, but it drains the battery noticeably faster. Will a heated jacket help my cold hands and feet?
Often, yes. When your core is cold, your body restricts blood flow to your extremities to protect your vital organs. Warm the core and that restriction eases, so hands and feet warm up as a side effect. A lot of customers who come in for heated gloves leave with a vest or jacket instead. If your extremities stay cold even with a warm core, then add heated gloves or socks on top.
Can I wash a heated jacket?
Yes, once the battery is removed — always, every time. Zip it up, cold water, gentle cycle, hang dry. Never put a heated garment in the dryer and never dry clean it. Leather and some technical shells are spot-clean only, so follow the care tag on your specific jacket.
Can I use any battery with my heated jacket?
No. The battery must match the voltage the jacket was designed for. A higher-voltage battery can overheat the panels, damage the jacket, and void your warranty. Use the battery that came with it or an approved replacement of the same voltage. The one exception is 5V: those run on standard USB power banks, which is a big part of the appeal.
