Why a heated vest?

A heated vest is the single most versatile piece of heated gear you can own. Thin heating panels sewn into the chest and back run off a small rechargeable battery, warming your core without adding bulk — and because your arms stay free, it layers under a jacket or works on its own in milder weather.

Warming your core is also the most efficient way to warm your whole body. When your chest and back are warm, your body stops pulling blood away from your hands and feet, so your extremities warm up as a side effect. That's why so many customers who think they need heated gloves are better served by a vest.

Which voltage is right for you?

Heated vests come in three voltages. Voltage sets how much heat the vest can produce — but the bigger day-to-day difference is what kind of battery you're tied to.

Standard USB — any power bank works

The easiest heated system to live with. 5V runs off an ordinary USB power bank — no proprietary battery, no special charger, nothing to hunt down when you lose it. The bank you already own for your phone will run your vest.

Plenty of heat for everyday cold, commuting, working outside, or drafty rooms — and the battery does double duty as a phone charger when you need it.

The trade-off is the battery: 7V systems use a brand-specific pack with a DC barrel plug, so replacements come from the manufacturer rather than any shelf.

Wires into your motorcycle

Built for motorcycle riders. A 12V vest wires directly into the bike's electrical system, so it delivers the most heat of any system and runs as long as the engine does — no battery to run flat mid-ride.

Off the bike, it's not practical. If you're not riding, this isn't your voltage.

The short version: most people should start with 5V — it's plenty warm for everyday cold and the USB battery is the easiest thing in the world to live with and replace. Step up to 7V if you're stationary in deep cold and want maximum output. Only choose 12V if you ride. Run times vary with battery capacity and heat setting.

Coverage

Heat zones & settings

Most heated vests place panels across the upper back and shoulders and along the chest. Better vests add a panel at the lower back / kidney area — a spot that makes a surprising difference if you're standing or sitting still for long periods.

More panels means more coverage, but it also means the battery works harder. A 4-panel 7V vest is the most common configuration and hits the right balance for most people. A 5–6 panel vest gets you fuller coverage but expects a larger battery to keep run times reasonable.

Nearly every vest offers three heat settings. Use high for the first few minutes to warm up, then drop to low — you'll more than double your battery life and stay comfortable all day.

What to look for

Six things worth checking before you buy — in roughly the order they matter.

Voltage

7V is the standard for vests and the best all-round choice. 5V is fine for moderate cold and lets the battery double as a phone charger. Don't mix voltages between battery and garment.

Panel count & placement

Look for chest plus upper back at minimum. A lower-back panel is a meaningful upgrade if you're stationary in the cold. 4 panels is the sweet spot for most people.

Battery capacity

Capacity drives run time. For a 7V vest, a 5,000mAh battery is a solid baseline; larger packs extend run time at the cost of some bulk in the pocket. Check whether the battery is even included.

Fit

Heated vests should fit close to the body. The panels need to sit near your skin to transfer heat — a loose vest heats air instead of you. Size for a fitted feel over a base layer.

Shell & weather resistance

Check the water-resistance rating if you'll be out in snow or drizzle. Wind-resistant shells make a large difference — wind strips heat away faster than cold air alone.

Warranty & support

Heated gear is electronics as much as apparel. Look for a real manufacturer warranty on the heating elements, and check that replacement batteries are actually available down the road.

How to wear it

Layering & care

Wear a heated vest as a mid layer: a base layer against your skin, the vest over it, and your shell or coat on top. That traps the heat against your body instead of letting it escape into the air — and it's the reason a heated vest often outperforms a much bulkier coat.

In shoulder season, a heated vest works fine as an outer layer on its own. Indoors — drafty houses, cold offices, garages — run it on low and you'll get all-day warmth out of a single charge.

  • Remove the battery before washing. Cold, gentle cycle, hang dry.

How long will a heated vest stay warm?

On a typical 7V vest with a 5,000mAh battery: roughly 2–3 hours on high, 4–6 on medium, and 6–9 on low. Bigger batteries extend all of those. Most people run high for a few minutes and then settle on low.

Should I size up for a heated vest?

No — size for a close fit. Heating panels transfer warmth by sitting near your body, so a loose vest wastes heat. Size it to fit snugly over a base layer, not over a thick sweater.

Can I wash a heated vest?

Yes, once the battery is removed. Zip it up, cold water, gentle cycle, and hang dry. Never put a heated garment in the dryer and never dry clean it. Always follow the care tag on your specific vest.

Is a heated vest better than a heated jacket?

For most people, yes. A vest warms your core — the most efficient place to add heat — keeps your arms free, and layers under whatever coat you already own. A heated jacket makes sense if you want a single all-in-one outer layer and don't mind the extra bulk and cost.

Will a heated vest help my cold hands and feet?

Often, yes. When your core is cold, your body restricts blood flow to your extremities to protect your vital organs. Warm the core and that restriction eases, so hands and feet warm up too. If your hands and feet stay cold even with a warm core, add heated gloves or socks.

Can I use any battery with my heated vest?

No. The battery must match the voltage the vest was designed for. A higher-voltage battery can overheat the panels, damage the vest, and void your warranty. Use the included battery or an approved replacement of the same voltage.
