How does 12V heated motorcycle gear get its power?
Most of it wires to the motorcycle itself: a fused battery harness connects to your bike's battery, and the gear plugs into that, so heat runs as long as the engine does — no pack to recharge mid-trip. It isn't strictly bike-only, though. Hybrid models like Gerbing's GT5 gloves can also run on battery packs, and Gerbing sells a 12V battery pack and hybrid battery kit separately for use off the bike. If you want warmth that never quits on a long winter ride, wired is the point.
What extra parts do I need to run Gerbing 12V gear?
At minimum, the 12V battery harness with fuses (around $12) that connects the system to your bike. Most riders add a temp controller — single or dual-zone, portable or wireless — because a controller is how you adjust heat while riding. From there the system is modular: Y harnesses and splitter cords let a jacket liner feed gloves, and pant liners feed sock liners or insoles. Coil cord extensions handle taller riders and bigger bikes. Each product page lists what's included, so you can avoid buying connectors twice.
Should I get 12V wired gear or battery-powered heated gear?
It depends where you ride and for how long. Wired 12V gear draws from the bike, so it can sustain steady heat for an entire day of winter riding — that's why serious cold-weather riders still choose it. Battery gear is self-contained and works off the bike, but you're limited by pack capacity. Hybrid models split the difference: bike power while riding, battery packs (sold separately) when you walk away. For long, cold rides, wired wins; for short commutes, battery gear is simpler.
What's a heated jacket liner, and can I wear it on its own?
A liner is a thin heated layer designed to go under your armored riding jacket rather than replace it — it carries no armor or abrasion protection of its own. That's deliberate: keeping heat close to your body is more efficient than heating an outer shell, and you keep the protective jacket you already trust. Gerbing's 12V liners for jackets, vests, and pants follow this pattern, and the jacket-liner-plus-gloves kit is the common starting setup. Off the bike it wears like a light jacket — just unheated unless connected to power.
Can I run gloves, jacket, and pants at the same time?
Yes — the system is designed to chain. A jacket liner typically passes power out through the sleeves to gloves, pant liners can feed sock liners or heated insoles, and a single- or dual-zone temp controller manages it all. The practical limit is your bike's electrical system: smaller bikes have less spare output than big touring machines, so check your bike's charging capacity before running a full suit of gear. Start with the zones that matter most — for most riders, that's hands and core.
