What's the difference between 12V and battery heated gear?
Power source, and it changes everything. Battery gear runs on a rechargeable pack you carry, which gives you a few hours before it needs charging. 12V gear wires into your motorcycle's electrical system — unlimited run time for the length of the ride, and more available heat than a pocket battery can deliver. For a long cold ride, 12V is the reason riders choose it. For walking around, a battery is more practical.
Do I need a temperature controller?
Effectively yes. Without one, 12V gear runs at full output — typically hotter than you want and impossible to dial back. A controller lets you adjust heat while riding. Single-zone controllers handle one garment; dual-zone controllers let you run a jacket and gloves at different levels, which matters because your hands and your chest rarely want the same setting.
Will 12V gear drain my motorcycle's battery?
Not while you're riding — the charging system supplies the power. The real question is capacity: a full heated setup draws meaningful current, and a smaller bike's alternator may not have room for a jacket, gloves and pants on top of lights and ignition. Check your bike's charging output and add up the wattage of what you plan to run before building a full kit.
Can I wear 12V gear off the bike?
Not without power. It's tethered to the motorcycle by design — unplug and it's just a liner. That's the trade-off for unlimited run time. Riders who want warmth on and off the bike often keep a battery-powered vest for walking around and 12V for riding, rather than trying to make one system do both.
