For each insole you need 4 batteries or rechargeable batteries type AA. The battery holder sits in a nifty pocket that you can attach to your ankle. Through a cable (70 cm in length) the case is compactly connected to the sole and so you can enjoy the heat comfortably with maximum freedom of movement . I had a previous version of this item in which the company provided rechargeable batteries.
The current version requires 8 AA batteries, which is not good in my opinion.
In addition they are selling less for the same price.
The heating elements do work however.

I do a lot of skiing and ice climbing, and have suffered with cold boots for years. After much research on this topic, I decided to buy these, and I'm glad I did. They are very well made, easy to fit, and keep my feet warm for 6 to 7 hours on the low setting.
It's not so much about having warm feet as it is about not having cold feet. Turning them up so my feet are truly warm feels odd, and slightly uncomfortable. It also affects the flex of my plastic boots. So I aim for neutrality: the "Goldilocks" temperature, not too warm, not cold, just right. The 4 temperature settings on these insoles make that possible. Once one understands the buttons, this can be set without even looking at the (very obvious) light display, which is handy.
I was happy to find that these have the right support for my sole: no other insole required.
