What's the difference between a heated coat and a heated jacket?

Mostly insulation and intent. A coat is built for serious cold — more loft, more coverage, and enough insulation to keep working when the battery dies. A lighter heated jacket or softshell is more wearable in mild conditions but leans harder on the battery. Buy the coat when the weather genuinely warrants it; buy the softshell when it doesn't.

Does a heated coat still work when the battery dies?

Yes — it keeps working as a coat, which is exactly the point. The insulation is doing real work independent of the electronics. That's the argument for an insulated heated coat over a thin heated shell: when the charge runs out on a long day, you still have a garment rather than a windbreaker.

Where should the heating elements be?

Chest and back, at minimum. That's your core, and warming it relaxes your body's instinct to restrict blood flow to your hands and feet — which is why a good heated coat makes your fingers warmer too. Collar and pocket elements are nice extras. A coat that heats the front but not the back is only doing half the job.

How should a heated coat fit?

With room for everything you'll wear underneath. A coat is the outermost layer, so it has to go over a shirt, a mid-layer, and possibly a fleece — and a compressed garment heats less effectively, because the elements need light contact rather than pressure. Size for a real winter's worth of layers, not for the shirt you're wearing when you order.
